Crates are a cost-effective solution for shipping merchandise that needs more protection than a pallet can provide, but doesn’t necessarily require the security or the expense of a box. If the merchandise you need to move is lightweight or bulky and oversized, crates provide an excellent option, somewhere in between the other two alternatives. While security may not be at the highest possible level, the modest protection that crates provide comes at a correspondingly modest price. Some ideal uses include:
- Light merchandise. (Bicycles, insulation, etc), that primarily requires protection from impact
- Items that do not need to be fully enclosed or sealed off from either human contact or the elements
- One-way shipping. (Many crates become damaged beyond use after delivery)
- Single-level shipping or storage situations. (Crates are not normally designed to stack vertically)
